On Saturday November 15, 2014, I served as one of the volunteers at the Loaves and Fishes
Thanksgiving dinner put on by the community and held at the Logan Presbyterian church. The volunteers also included some from the LDS Young Single Adult wards at Utah State University [please see the notes below for clarification/correction on the group who volunteered at this particular event]. Kudos to all the volunteers for their time and helping hands, and especially George and Julie Whitney for all the hours and work that they put in to this event.

We want to thank the many people and organizations who made this event so successful. Special thanks to JBS for donating the beef, the Bishop’s Storehouse of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for their donation of the turkeys, and the local food bank for providing the rest of the trimmings.

The I Lead I Serve 4H club had a corner set up for the children with projects just for them. The Westminster Bell Coir under the direction of Kathy Bullock performed a variety of selections including some holiday favorites.

“This is awesome!” said a mother of seven whose husband had recently lost his job, “I think this
brings families together and gives others a chance to serve” When  I expressed my concern for her and her family, she smiled and said,” I am not worried, because the Lord always provides and does not let us down.”

I cannot express in words how it made me and the other volunteers feel to see the joy on their faces as we served them. I want to express my gratitude to Sharilee Griffiths for giving me the opportunity to be a part of a team that made a difference in people’s lives.

  1. Sometimes it's hard to recognize the distinction between members of College Ward, Utah and people connected to Utah State University. Most of the youth associated with preparing and serving the meal referenced in this blog, along with many adults, are from College Ward. It is a small, used to be rural, community between Logan and Wellsville, deriving its name from the old Brigham Young College in Logan, not the University. They are also the Young Men and Women and adults of The LDS College Ward; which makes them College Ward College Warders. HOW GREAT IS THAT. George Whitney

  2. Thank you for your clarification on this, Julie. I think one of the awesome things about the Loaves & Fishes meal is how it involves the full community. Each meal brings a new group of volunteers together to prepare for, serve and clean-up the meal. Sometimes it's a church group, sometimes a community organization, at other times employees from a particular business, etc. The Loaves & Fishes Board just held their annual 'Thank You' event where groups are able to sign up for the following year and every meal for the 2015 year except for July 4th has already been covered!! That says a LOT about our community!

Again- THANK YOU for adding this clarification/correction to the blog. We appreciate your input. (And I have also corrected the spelling of your name! ;) Thank you for your patience with us.)
