KUED Kids Reading Marathon

The@ KUED Kids Reading Marathon and Super Reader Party has moved to spring! The Reading Marathon starts March 1 and runs through March 31! This years theme is STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) and is sure to be bigger and better than ever.
Are you a Parent, Grand Parent, relative  or just a friend of a child that would love to become a #SuperReader ? Have or help them read 20 mins a day and submit their reading minutes at KUED.org/reading before April 5:KUED.org/kids to receive an invitation to the #SuperReaderParty on April 11th.

Spring is great time to help even the smallest children become involved in learning about the environment changing around them as the season changes from winter to spring. Every community in Cache Valley has access to some sort of Library for you to get books and other learning materials to help facilitate this learning. These libraries may be having their own reading programs you could become involved with.
If you do not have or know children that you could help with reading , your local elementary or middle school is always in need of people willing to read with or listen to children read. Bridgerland Literacy is also an organization in need of reading tutors for adults. Check with your local Senior Citizens Center for other opportunities that Seniors may want or need with reading and literacy.

You don't have to be in a specific program to be involved with helping someone read, just reach out to someone this month that you can share a story or two with. It will be a satisfying opportunity for you and you'll be glad you did.

On Saturday February 28th, The Cache Valley Volunteer Center together with a team of Utah State University business management students will be hosting the 2nd Annual Volunteer Center Youth Leadership Summit. We’re very excited for this event! It will be a full day conference held on campus at USU for the high school students of Cache Valley. There will be prizes, free lunch, Interactive workshops, a potential service project, and a couple of choice speakers. The conference is being designed to help budding high school students develop skills in various areas of leadership, and is free for all local students who would like to sign up.

The speakers for the conference will be Staff Sergeant Russell Madsen of the US Army and award winning teacher and researcher of the year Dr. Ben Blau, a finance professor at the Huntsman School of Business at USU. We are excited to hear the unique perspectives that both these qualified individuals can offer regarding leadership.

40 days of Peace are underway in the wake of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. I am a latecomer and have had Internet issues but I don't think anyone will mind me being peaceful today. Maybe it's ok for one to exercise peace principles a week beyond the 40 or even after that. That's pretty silly but it would be good for anyone and everyone to jump right into the middle whenever you happen to find out about it. Then there's the ripple effect.

The Cache Valley Volunteer Center is participating in the 40 Days project and anyone is welcome to join. Go here for more information: mlkflc.org/40daysofpeace. Part of Dr. Kings' agenda was to make a difference concerning poverty. The volunteer center is therefore conducting a Financial Wellness workshop the rest of this month and throughout February. It is not too late to get involved and learn about better management of your money.

February 28th there will be the 2nd Annual Youth Leadership Summit. Youth looking to better themselves this year, develop leadership skills, and get involved in service in the community, the Youth Leadership Summit is one way to do that.

As for the 40 Days of Peace, ANYONE can participate and it will only take a couple minutes of your time. You are welcome to serve your neighbor, assist your favorite non-profit, serve at your school or your work, or most importantly, serve your family. Make it real by writing it down and signing this pledge to commit to yourself and others that you WILL DO SOMETHING! Anything that you are willing to share is a success!

Report: Volunteering in America Remains Strong

The new Volunteering and Civic Life in America research report shows that service to others continues to be a priority for millions of Americans. The findings from the annual study were released today by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and the National Conference on Citizenship (NCoC).
This year’s study found that 62.6 million adults (25.4 percent) volunteered through an organization in 2013. Altogether, Americans volunteered nearly 7.7 billion hours last year and the estimated value of that service is $173 billion.
Learn more results and find out how your state or area performed at the links below.
