Be a Mentor . . . Be the Difference!

Mentoring

As part of National Mentoring Month I am sharing information on a variety of different mentoring relationships.  Today we will look at the mentoring relationship most people think of when they hear the work 'mentoring' ~ adults mentoring youth.

WHAT IS IT?
Mentoring--from the Greek word meaning enduring--is defined as a sustained relationship between a youth and an adult. Through continued involvement, the adult offers support, guidance, and assistance as the younger person goes through a difficult period, faces new challenges, or works to correct earlier problems. In particular, where parents are either unavailable or unable to provide responsible guidance for their children, mentors can play a critical role.

The two types of mentoring are natural mentoring and planned mentoring. Natural mentoring occurs through friendship, collegiality, teaching, coaching, and counseling. In contrast, planned mentoring occurs through structured programs in which mentors and participants are selected and matched through formal processes.

WHY ARE MENTORING PROGRAMS SO POPULAR?
The number of mentoring programs has grown dramatically in recent years. This popularity results in part from compelling testimonials by people--youth and adults alike--who have themselves benefited from the positive influence of an older person who helped them endure social, academic, career, or personal crises.

HOW DO THEY WORK?
Mentoring programs are established to match a suitable adult or older youth--the mentor--with a younger person. Potential mentors are recruited from various sources including corporate, professional, and religious communities, as well as neighborhood citizens. Nominations for mentors are sought formally and informally through flyers, posters, mailings, and word-of-mouth.

Appropriately matching mentors with youths is at the heart of all programs. Matching can be done formally and informally through interviews, personal profiles, comparative interest inventories, and get-acquainted sessions. In programs where mentors and youths are given a chance to choose each other, planned mentoring takes on many aspects of natural mentoring.

WHY ARE THEY NEEDED?
Data clearly show many youths have a desperate need for positive role models. The most compelling data describe changes to the American family structure: the number of single-parent homes has radically increased, as have two-parent working families. More preventive care is needed, as are support networks to fill the void left by busy or absent parents. Other statistics are equally troubling: each day in the United States, 3,600 students drop out of high school, and 2,700 unwed teenage girls get pregnant (Petersmeyer 1989).

WHAT ARE THEY FOR?
Mentoring programs generally serve the following broad purposes:
  • Educational or academic mentoring helps mentored youth improve their overall academic achievement.
  • Career mentoring helps mentored youth develop the necessary skills to enter or continue on a career path.
  • Personal development mentoring supports mentored youth during times of personal or social stress and provides guidance for decision making.
WHAT DOES THE RESEARCH SAY?
Arlene Mark of New York City's I Have a Dream program observed, "We will only know who can be helped or what is the right kind of mentoring, when we try it." (Flaxman and Ascher 1992). Yet while research on the effects of mentoring is scarce, some studies and program evaluations do support positive claims (Flaxman 1992). In an evaluation of Project RAISE, a Baltimore-based mentoring project, McPartland and Nettles (1991) found mentoring had positive affects on school attendance and grades in English but not on promotion rates or standardized test scores. They concluded that positive effects are much more likely when one-on-one mentoring has been strongly implemented. Another evaluation (Cave and Quint 1990) found participants in various mentoring programs had higher levels of college enrollment and higher educational aspirations than nonparticipants receiving comparable amounts of education and job-related services (figure 1).

WHAT MENTORING PROGRAMS ARE AVAILABLE IN CACHE VALLEY?
There are several mentoring programs available here in Cache Valley to serve Cache Valley youth. Here is a list of those I am aware of:

TEAM Mentoring is a program designed to help high school students prepare for college.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is now being run by the USU Val R Christiansen Center and serves youth ages 6-17.

Options for Independence  provides less structured, but very valuable mentoring opportunities for youth with disabilities.

I am not aware of other specific mentoring programs, but there are some good options for your youth to receive group mentoring through after-school programs. Check with your school to see what is available. There are also great opportunities for youth to receive mentoring through participation and leadership in various service groups. Contact me at Sharilee10@gmail.com if you would like to get your youth involved in leadership opportunities that will provide them with unofficial mentoring.

If you are aware of other official mentoring programs not listed here please be sure to let me know!

16 Money Trends We'll See in 2016

As you know, Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University series is an integral part of the Financial Wellness project. Here is a great article from him that gives some insight into some of the expected trends of 2016 and shares some ideas for how you can make them work for you! [With a few notes from me, of course!]

Feel free to join us for one of our upcoming classes. You can get the details HERE.

16 Money Trends We'll See in 2016

We may not have a financial crystal ball, but we do know what’s going on with Americans and their money.

Here’s our list of the top 16 money predictions that could affect you in 2016. If these don’t motivate you to take control of your cash, get out of debt, and save for your goals, we don’t know what will!

No matter what else happens this year, resolve to make your money count—starting now.

1. Americans will save more money.

According to a survey by SKOUT, 92% of respondents want to save more money in 2016. But most aren’t sure how to go about it. If you need a little help figuring out how to ditch the credit cards and save up your dollars, start with EveryDollar’s free Guide to Budgeting (or join us in the upcoming Financial Wellness Bootcamp or Financial Peace University!)

2. Fines for not having medical coverage will increase.

Last year, the penalty for passing on health insurance was 2% of your household income or $325 per person—whichever was greater. This year, that penalty goes up to either 2.5% of your income or $695 per person. Instead of paying steeper fines, put that money to better use by protecting your family’s physical and financial health.

3. The unemployment rate will drop.

If you’re looking for higher pay and work that matters, you’re in luck. Some forecasters predict the national unemployment rate will be down to 4.8% by the end of the year. That’s down a slight bit from the end of 2015. If you’re in need of a job, now’s a great time to find it. So, go snag one!
[NOTE: Here in Utah the unemployment rate is actually below the national unemployment rate and, coupled with a quickly rising economic growth rate, we are expected to see a slight increase in the unemployment rate. Not to worry though-- we will still enjoy a lower than average unemployment rate!]

4. Car values will go down.

Think you need a new car? Think again. As soon as you drive that four-door dream off the lot, its value will plummet by thousands of dollars. And each year after that, it will do the same. That’s because cars are not an investment; they’re a necessity. So just pay cash for a reliable used vehicle and pay yourself the rest.

5. Murphy will continue to show up.

Unexpected emergencies tend to happen in pairs—or sometimes whole teams. Murphy’s Law states that whatever can go wrong will go wrong. So prepare for that blown transmission, burst pipe and broken leg now by putting a $1,000 emergency fund in place. Then, once you’re out of debt, build it up to three to six months of expenses. Sooner or later, you’ll need it. [Stay in touch with the financial wellness project and your financial coach to enjoy benefits and tips that will help you achieve your goals even faster!]

6. More workplaces will offer financial wellness.

Stressed-out employees make for less productive team members. That’s why companies are investing more time and money into the financial lives of their employees. So if you’re an employee, take advantage of your financial wellness benefit or help get one established in your office this year. [You can also help us get the word out to your co-workers, and even your employer, that there are resources available through the financial wellness project. Let us help! It will make things better for everyone involved!]

7. The U.S. deficit will continue to grow.

America has the largest debt burden in the world. But unlike the government, regular citizens can’t print more money whenever they want it. So if you’re sick of being in debt, make some drastic cuts to your lifestyle and find a way to boost your income. Oh, and stop borrowing money! [Need some help from a personal financial coach? One can be provided through the financial wellness project at no cost.]

8. Social Security will be one year closer to failing.

The Social Security Administration expects at least a partial shortfall in benefits by 2033. After that, there’s no guarantee how long this form of government support will last. Translation: Uncle Sam won’t be leaving you a big inheritance. So meet with your financial coach and get your investments in order! [Financial coaches are available through the financial wellness project at no cost!]

9. Last year’s technology will cost less (and work just as well).

You know that hot, new iPhone 6S that came out in 2015? It won’t be hot for long. That’s good news because it won’t be as expensive either. The bottom line? Wait six months to a year, and you’ll land perfectly good gadgets for way less.

10. The new president will affect the stock market.

No matter who gets elected, the market will respond in some way. If things go south, don’t freak out. The stock market is just like a roller coaster—and those who don’t jump off won’t get hurt. It’s election year, so you’re guaranteed to see some highs and lows!
[Have questions about investing? We will be providing some great training opportunities through the financial wellness project. Let us know that you have an interest in learning more about investing!]

11. College tuition will rise.

Every year, many universities across the country hike their tuition. You can count on it. So, if you have a child in college or heading that way, help them find ways to offset rising costs by working part time, earning scholarships, or graduating early. Student loans should never be an option.

12. The housing market will continue to rebound.

The National Association of Realtors expects existing-home sales to increase this year. So if you’ve been waiting to sell, 2016 could be your year. When you’re ready to list, find a real estate pro who can help you earn top dollar for your home. A good agent is worth every penny. [We have some excellent agents that are committed to putting your needs and interests as top priority. Ask us for a referral.]

13. Gas prices will go back up (and back down).

If you’re enjoying less than $2 per gallon fill-ups like we are, remember these things fluctuate based on a variety of factors. So don’t be shocked if the price inches back up (and then back down) again. Make a fresh budget each month to cover shifting categories like gasoline, utilities and monthly repairs.

14. Baby Boomers will continue to rebuild their nest eggs.

The Great Recession hit the baby boom generation particularly hard. So if you’re in this age bracket, be sure you’re still on track to meet your retirement goals. [Not certain if you’re investing enough? Ask your financial coach to help you figure out your FIN number and make a plan to achieve your goal.]

15. Individual 401(k) contribution limits remain steady.

Once you have your fully stocked emergency fund, you can begin to invest 15% of your pretax income into retirement savings. Contribution limits remain the same this year, so you can still add up to $18,000 annually to your 401(k) account.

16. More people will rely on digital budgeting.

Millions of people are turning away from Excel spreadsheets and signing up for online budgeting tools. These money apps make it easy for Americans to sync up their bank accounts and keep track of their spending. EveryDollar is an awesome new online budgeting tool that helps you do just that.

Ever year has its ups and downs. This year will be no exception. But don’t let that stop you from making 2016 a personal best. You can achieve a lot with your money in 12 months!

New Year's REVolutions~

As many of you know, my husband is a 'tire guy'!  It's nice having someone to take care of the car and make sure my 'wheels' are all they need to be. So-- I particularly like these thoughts from one of my favorite mentors at Training Wheels. (Of course, I made a few tweaks to better fit our group!):

This year make a New Year's REVolution!

That's right, a REVolution!  No, I don't want you to revolt against your boss or your teacher or family members.

I want you to think about what ways you want to Burn Tread in 2016.
  • What ways do you want to grow?
  • How do you want your unique skills to EVolve?
  • What are the important steps you need to take for your dreams to really TAKE OFF?
Whether you made a new year's RESolution, do take some time to reflect on the previous year and set goals for the new year. We have some fun ways we are going to 'leave tracks' this year. What will YOU do?

As for me, I'm going to be starting on a new journey in 2016 carrying on the financial wellness project sponsored by my new venture, Financial Coaching. I'm not sure what lies ahead, but I am excited and looking forward to really focusing on helping Cache Valley families make real change and develop habits that will lead them to the peace and success they are looking for. I hope you will join me for the journey and together we can do some aMaZiNg things here in Cache Valley.

I hope that your 2016 is everything you've always dreamed of and that you will consider sharing your talents and expertise to bless those around you.

Come join us! Get involved!

Make a positive difference!
