Driving for Education Golf Tournament

image here
Up on the top shelf in our storage room, I have a box full of old blue calculators. The same style I used as an elementary school student, this classroom set (used, from ebay) was my  biggest splurge when I began teaching school ten years ago. (And though I haven't taught for several years, somehow I've grown attached to that set!)

The Cache Education Foundation has a Tools for Schools grant program set up where they offer teachers 'mini-grants' of up to $200 to purchase lasting classroom supplies -- things like my favorite blue calculators. Applicants describe the project they have in mind, the materials required, and the expected learning outcomes for students. What a great oppurtunity to help teachers equip their classrooms with meaningful learning tools!

Next Tuesday, the Cache Education Foundation will be hosting their annual 'Driving for Education' golf tournament at Birch Creek golf course in Smithfield. This event helps to raise awareness for the foundation as well as raise funds for the Tools for Schools  program. Come and enjoy a day of golf, great food, and fun prizes while supporting Cache County schools.

A thank you to Logan's Pioneers

image
"The man who could shovel the most dirt or cut the most hay or grain, or bring the largest load of logs or wood from the canyon was the hero of the community in those times… the heroes were also those women who could cook, sew, keep a house clean and neat, and assist in times of need in fieldwork and doing chores."

I've been reading a history of Logan, and have been so impressed with just how much Logan's early pioneers were able to accomplish. Building the Logan tabernacle and temple were major accomplishments that have become lasting hallmarks to those early settlers. But they also constructed canals, created a highway through Logan Canyon, and helped each other with all sorts of daily needs like taking turns guarding the town's horses and livestock, building fences, cutting hay and gathering donations to help those in need.

Though our work and the service we give differs greatly from that of the pioneers, today's heroes are still very much like those of Logan's early days. It is those people who do the work that needs to be done, and do it the best they can. Often the service we give to those around us comes from just doing our job and doing it well.

Of course, if you feel like doing even more, there are always opportunities to get involved and make a difference outside of your every day work too!

You Got Served

Did you get 'served?'   The Cache Valley Volunteer Center offers an up-to-date list of volunteer opportunities for individuals, groups,  families, teens and kids.  Check out our listings to find out how you can pay it forward.

The Utah Commission on Service & Volunteerism has created a new program to help encourage service in Utah's communities. The idea is simple -- serve your community (a friend, a neighbor, an organization…), then offer the challenge to someone else.

In celebration of the 20th Anniversary of UServeUtah, the Utah Commission on Service and Volunteerism and recognizing that community engagement improves the quality of  life of citizens and contributes significantly to our state's economic growth and prosperity, Governor Gary Herbert has declared 2014 a year of service in Utah.

Utah and Cache Valley need your skills and experience to keep our community strong, so how will YOU serve? Start by visiting our website to find an opportunity near you. Another way to make an impact is to encourage those around you to volunteer. Chec out the state's "You Got Served! Pay it Forward!" campaign. It's a fun way to get your friends and family excited about volunteering too!

However, you choose to serve in our community we hope you will join the 20th Anniversary celebration by taking the Governor's challenge personally and making 2014 a year of service!

What service means to me as an American

image

My kids and I are spending our days this week with red, white, and blue projects and star-spangled flag activities. Our fridge is getting stocked for a weekend barbecue, and plans are in the works for fireworks and parades. The kids have been learning to sing 'Fifty Nifty United States' and it has become the soundtrack to our summer days.  In the midst of all the fun, conversations are popping up over breakfast, craft projects, and car rides. 'I'm so happy to live in America' or 'Isn't it great that we have so much freedom to choose what we want to do?'

A friend recently told a story of living abroad years ago. He and a friend were looking for a way to serve in their small community when they came across an old  wall overgrown with bamboo. They went to the city officials to get permission to work on clearing the space, and were met with confusion and suspicion. 'Why would you want to do this for us?' was the general idea.

I think that one of the great blessings of living in our country is the culture of service.  Every day I see neighbors, friends, and strangers here in Cache Valley offering service to one another - usually without giving it a second thought.  What a wonderful area we live in.

Because of my husband's work, we've had many opportunities over the past several years to spend time in New York City.  While he works, my kids and I explore and enjoy the sights and sounds and wonders of the city so unlike our own. As our family has grown, our recent trips have left me wondering if I wasn't one of the most unique sights to see in the big city (a young mom with 4 young children!)  And yet, each time we visit I am amazed at how quickly the strangers that I encounter there go out of there way to help me and my family.  Carrying a stroller up the subway steps, giving a smile or a kind remark to a tired child, giving up seats on the train, holding an elevator, offering directions, opening doors and holding them for our full parade of children to pass through. And all of this service, again, without a moment's pause.

With this week's celebrations and festivities, I'm so grateful to live in America. And I'm grateful for the examples of service great and small that make our country - with it's  big cities and small towns -  a such a wonderful place.
