Thanksgiving Safety Tips

Whether you are cooking for a volunteer project or cooking for your own family, food safety is a critical thing to be thinking about. With Thanksgiving upon us, now is a good time to share some safety tips for your Thanksgiving Feast.

Follow these tips today and always:

1. Keep everything clean.
  • Scrub hands with soap under warm water for 20 seconds. Do the same after handling food, especially raw meat or poultry, to avoid cross-contamination.
  • Clean counters, cutting boards, dishes and silverware with hot water and soap before and afer preparing each food item.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables to remove surface dirt, but do not rinse raw meat or poultry -- this makes it more likely for bacteria to spread.
2. Heat foods to the proper temperature.
  • Color is never a reliable indicator of safely cooked food. Use a food thermometer to make sure meat, poultry, and fish are cooked to a safe internal temperature -- typically 165 degrees.
3.  Keep foods at appropriate temperatures.
  • Keep hot foods at 140 degrees or warmer with chafin dishes, slow cookers and warming trays.
  • Keep cold foods at 40 degrees or colder. Nest serving dishes in bowls of ice and store moist desserts, such as pumpkin pie and cakes with shipped frosting, in the refrigerator until serving.
  • Never let food sit out at room temperature for than two hours.
4.  Store leftovers safely.
  • Divide leftovers into shallow containers, which allow rapid cooling, before storing in the refrigerator or freezer.
  • Never defrost food at room temperature. Use a microwave or oven to reheat foods to an internal temperature of 165 degrees.
  • Eat leftover food within 3-4 days.

DOUBLE the Benefits of your Family Volunteer Day Service

Family Volunteer Day is a day of service that celebrates the power of families who work together to support their neighbors and neighborhoods. Each year, thousands of families use the day to teach children valuable, real-life lessons about compassion and caring. Volunteering also can be a great way for kids and adults to develop skills, learn more about their community and make friends.

This year Family Volunteer Day will be held on Saturday, November 21st. Take time to gather your family together and teach your children about the value of service. WHAT you do isn't important~ it's that you DO SOMETHING TOGETHER!

Learn more about Family Volunteer Day on the Points of Light website.

DOUBLE DOUBLE your efforts by taking time to make a short (15-30 second) video on your phone camera to enter your service activity in the Super Service Challenge!

Any group of 2 or more can participate. It's as easy as 1, 2, 3.
Grab your family (any group of 2 or more works- family, friends, co-workers!) and
1.  SERVE!! Anything you choose to do counts. The key is to serve together~ serve your favorite non-profit, your neighbor, even your family.
2.  Create a 15-30 second video clip sharing why you served (can be up to 2 minutes, but doesn't need to be).
3.  You can email the clip to cachevolunteercenter@gmail.com and we'll do the uploading for you and post it where others can help you get more entries by voting for it (voting is not required, it just helps get more entries).

Your Family Volunteer Day service just got
                   DOUBLE
                      DOUBLE benefits!!

Remember, you can also enter any other service activities in the Super Service Challenge. Are you helping clean-up your neighborhood for Fall prep? Volunteering with a youth group? your church? your company? It ALL COUNTS if you just create a short video for it! And it helps our local non-profits win CASH to improve services here in Cache Valley.

Cache Community Connections

Civic and Interfaith Council Thirteenth Annual

Interfaith Thanksgiving Service

Sunday, November 22, 2015

7:00 pm Logan Tabernacle

Giving Thanks with One Voice

Cache Community Connections is a group of local religious, civic, and business leaders in the valley who first came together to organize an interfaith memorial service following the tragic events on September 11, 2001. Working together was such a positive experience that the group agreed to continue meeting monthly to foster understanding and cooperation among all religious groups in Cache Valley.  This is the thirteenth annual Interfaith Thanksgiving service in Cache Valley. Thanksgiving, a holiday that belongs to all Americans, offers a wonderful opportunity to listen and learn, hearing the diverse voices of our valley giving thanks as one community.

A sincere thanks to all of the participating faith communities, groups, and individuals who make this celebration a special one. The program is supported in part by the RAPZ tax, Cache Valley Radio Group, and Square One Printing.
