NAME CHANGE: The Family Place

CHILD & FAMILY SUPPORT CENTER LAUNCHES NEW NAME TO
“THE FAMILY PLACE”

(LOGAN, UT)—After 32 years of being known as the Child & Family Support Center of Cache County, Inc. (CFSC), the CFSC will officially change their name to The Family Place at a joint event with Lee’s Marketplace and the Cache Valley Morning Rotary on June 20, 2015.

Through a process of garnering input from stakeholders and hosting focus groups, the CFSC found that their name was continually being confused with other agencies in addition to having a stigma attached of only working with victims of child abuse. “Changing our name is a monumental step that has required careful consideration,” states Jim Payant, President of The Family Place Board of Directors. “The basic reasoning behind the change is to create a more family friendly and welcoming name that will also help to establish our own unique identity and allow us to reach and serve a larger population in the community.”

The emphasis of The Family Place is on building stronger families. Located at three convenient locations throughout Cache County (Hyrum, Logan and Smithfield), The Family Place is looking forward to continuing the tradition of supporting families through workshops and classes for parents and children, care for children at the Kid’s Place, counseling, the Good-Touch/Bad-Touch ® program and family focused activities such as the Princess Party, Superhero Party and Kids vs. Mud.

The Family Place will officially launch their new name at 1:00 p.m. during a brief presentation at the Lee’s Marketplace Classic Car Show over Father’s Day weekend in Logan. The Car Show will go from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and will not only feature an anticipated 100 classic cars, a live band and BBQ, but will provide family friendly activities for the community to enjoy. “Lee’s Marketplace is a family-oriented company that works to be involved in communities in which we serve,” said Jonathan Badger, President of Lee’s Marketplace. “The Family Place is the perfect partnership with Lee’s to make this goal a reality.”

Also included in the event is a children’s art show, a free-throw shooting challenge, a putting green, tricycle drag racing, a t-shirt cannon, bounce house, and face painting. Arial Assault, a traveling gymnastics circus, along with High Point Gymnastics has also donated their time to provide a thrilling performance on the trampoline throughout the event.

Proceeds from the food and raffle ticket sales will help fulfill the $2,500 commitment that the Cache Valley Morning Rotary, with the support of Lee’s Marketplace, has made to The Family Place.

Esterlee Molyneux, Executive Director of The Family Place is thrilled over the prospect of the new name and the support of the community. “Cache Valley prides itself on strong families which are the foundation of our strong community. The role of The Family Place is to uplift, edify and encourage the good things that families are already doing, and to be here to support them during the stressful and challenging times as well.”

The Child & Family Support Center will remain the legal name of The Family Place.

For more information about The Family Place, please visit www.TheFamilyPlaceUtah.org or call (435)725-8880.

Summer Learning Day on June 19

SLD_Pin.jpgSummer Learning Day is a national advocacy day recognized to spread awareness about the importance of summer learning for our nation’s youth in helping close the achievement gap and support healthy development in communities all across the country. Whether you’re a community, summer program, school, or parent, there are many ways to celebrate Summer Learning Day!
Research shows that summers without quality learning opportunities put our nation’s youth at risk for falling behind – year after year – in core subjects like math and reading. The math and reading skills low-income students lose each summer are cumulative and contribute significantly to the achievement gap between lower- and higher-income kids.
Many kinds of high-quality learning opportunities during the summer can make a difference in stemming learning loss and ultimately, closing the country’s achievement gap. This year for Summer Learning Day, NSLA is asking everyone—programs, families, schools, educators, policymakers, businesses—to make summer a season of learning by pledging to #KeepKidsLearning on our interactive map.If you are hosting a Summer Learning Day event/program, we encourage you to put it on the map at SummerLearningDayMap.org so that families can find you. If you are a family you can find resources HERE

TEAM Mentoring Receives a Grant to Address Hunger Issues!

The youth make a difference initiative

TEAM – Together Everyone Achieves More

The TEAM Mentoring program will engage in several initiatives to address food security, nutrition, and food education including a weekly backpack program at Wilson Elementary, Food Fun! nutrition education program for 1,000+ elementary students, a bi-monthly Loaves and Fishes community meal, expand the composting program to other elementary schools, and other programs as determined and designed by high school students in the TEAM Mentoring program at Logan High School. All projects are 100% youth-led with high School students taking a leadership role in planning and implementing the projects. More than 2,000 youth will be impacted. The funding will be used to purchase supplies for the various projects. Through incorporating the 'You Got Served, Pay It Forward, Pass It On' campaign we promoted throughout 2014 in conjunction with UServe Utah we will encourage ongoing involvement in hunger issues throughout the community and particularly in the schools.  This initiative will empower those it helps by first addressing the food security, nutrition, and food education issues they face individually, and also modeling for them how change can be brought about, and how they can become a part of the solution.

A huge THANK YOU to Opal Apple for providing us with the funding for these projects!!

Taste the Opal Difference

You can't compare apples to Opals!

Opal apples can’t be compared to an everyday apple. These sunny fruits are like none other — with a beautiful appearance, distinctively crunchy texture, floral aroma and a sweet, tangy flavor. But one of the most incredible and natural features of this apple is that it does not brown after cutting. So an Opal a day will keep your salads — and your kids’ lunchboxes — crisp and fresh.
Non-GMO Project Verification
Opal apples are Non-GMO Project verified. They are the first U.S. apple variety to be verified by the Non-GMO Project, the only independent verification in North America for non-GMO food. These naturally non-browning apples are and have always been in compliance with the Non-GMO Standard.

The Opal® brand apple was discovered in Europe in 1999. This new apple-flavor stems from a cross between a Golden Delicious and a Topaz.
Over the last 12 years, Opal® brand apple has been tested in 63 orchards throughout Europe and the Mediterranean.

In March of 2010, Opal® brand apple made its debut appearance in the United States grown exclusively by Ralph Broetje, Broetje Orchards in Washington State. Opal® Brand apple is being marketed and distributed exclusively in North America by FirstFruits Marketing of Washington.

Storytelling Festival 2015

Once upon a time, Wayne McKay, a former entrepreneur, educator and international consultant, left that life behind and hunkered down beside the hearth of his humble cottage in Cache Valley, Utah to sing songs, tell tales, and do voice work now and again. But, it wasn't long before he discovered storytelling festivals and began to dream of his home, beautiful Cache Valley, with a festival of its own. The Cache Valley Storytelling Festival is the realization of that dream.

Featuring storytellers, musicians, puppeteers, a magician and food vendors, this family friendly event will take place at North Logan's Elk Ridge Park (1100 East 2500 North) Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, June 11th-13th. The food vendors and story store (featuring souvenirs of the festival and books and CDs of the performers) will be available Thursday evening and all day Friday and Saturday.

Tackle Summer Hunger!

Hunger hits especially hard when kids are out of school for the summer. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) ensures that low-income children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. This summer, USDA plans to serve more than 200 million free meals to children 18 years and under at approved SFSP sites. Promoting summer feeding sites in your community is one of the most important things you can do to ensure no child goes hungry this summer. You can find summer feeding sites and tools to help raise awareness at the USDA's website. Additional resources are available from No Kid Hungry, including a free texting service to help families find information about summer meal sites near them. Families in need can text 'Food' to 877-877, and receive a text back with the address and program information for sites closest to them, or information about how to find food resources in their area.
