National Night Out

Tonight (August 5th), neighborhoods and communities across the country will be celebrating 'Americas night out against crime.' Established over 30 years ago, National Night Out now includes millions of people coming together at block parties, barbecues, parades, seminars and rallies in cities and towns nationwide.  Obviously this one evening of front porch vigils and neighborhood cookouts isn't aimed to eradicate crime. But, the energy and excitement of people coming together and getting to know each other and being aware of what is happening in their own neighborhoods is encouraging. Several cities have advertised the evenings events as 'A great chance to get to know your neighbors.  Matt Peskin who first introduced National Night Out in 1984 described the nights benefit - "It's a wonderful opportunity for communities nationwide to promote police-community partnerships, crime prevention, and neighborhood camaraderie."

Last month, after a recent string of burglaries, North Logan citizens gathered together as a neighborhood to organize their own unofficial neighborhood watch program. North Park police chief Kim Hawkes encouraged those attending to be observant and to let the police know about potential issues. In an article with the Herald Journal, he said "My hope is that the enthusiasm that this group had can carry on… and they will maintain good habits of sharing information with us and really work at keeping our community safe."
